Sloane Marie

Sloane Marie Ferrell arrived on Thursday, January 13 at 8:42 pm, weighing 9lbs. 4oz., measuring 20 inches long and perfect in every way!

The birth story:

I went to work on Thursday the 13th, determined to wrap up a few last minute details at work before leaving for my scheduled induction that would begin late that night. Around nine o’clock, I started thinking that maybe my water had broken, but I wasn’t really sure. I knew it was pretty rare for someone’s water to break, and there was no big gush like you see in the movies, so I decided to keep working. Eventually I started feeling a few pains and many calls and texts from my family telling me to “GO HOME!” Around 12:15 I decided to leave school. David met me at the house and we debated about whether or not we should go up to the hospital. Our appointment was at 5:00pm and at this point my contractions were still not very painful. I thought maybe we should just relax and head up there at our scheduled time. All of our birthing classes had taught us how slow the labor process was, especially the first time around, so I thought we had plenty of time. David, however, didn’t want to risk delivering this baby by himself at home and convinced me that we should go ahead and drive to the hospital. Smart man! We arrived at the hospital around 4:00 and walked up to the front desk to let them know we were early and suspected that maybe my water had broken. They quickly ushered us back to a room. Once we were situated, they checked me and I was dilated to a 4 and my water was definitely broken. Since I was already at a four I was able to go ahead and get my epidural! YEA! Once the epidural had set in they checked me again and I was dilated to a 9! They said we would start pushing in just a little bit and called the doctor because she had gone home thinking it would be a while. Everything was moving much more quickly than David and I or even the nurses thought. We started pushing before the doctor arrived and had to stop because Sloane was coming too fast. Dr. Bullock arrived and I pushed 2 more times for a grand total of 4 pushes and at 8:42 pm she was out! Those first cries were the greatest sounds I had ever heard! Everything seemed so surreal. I couldn’t believe she had actually arrived and holding her for the first time was a life-changing moment. We are so in love and we feel blessed that everything went so smoothly and that everyone was happy and healthy.

Sloane’s first doctor’s appointment was that following Monday. She was 21 inches long and had lost a little bit of weight, but since then, she has been growing like a weed! At her two-week checkup her weight was greater than the 75th percentile and her height was in the 95th percentile at 22 inches long. She is a happy healthy girl!
On the way to her first doctor's appointment. It was so cold we had her budndled up pretty good and protected from all of the germs!

We have enjoyed capturing many of Sloane's first experiences!

Sloane is now five weeks old weighing around 11lbs. 3 oz. and measuring about 23 inches long. She is sleeping really well at night and she is really alert during the day. She loves tummy time, baths and eating!

A few of our favorite things right now:
When she gears up to sneeze, and then doesn’t need to, she makes an adorable sighing sound that sounds like “aaaauhhhhaaaahhh.”
She likes to “sing” when she eats, she makes all sorts of squeaking and grunting sounds.
She likes to smile in her sleep.
She loves to snuggle her head right under your neck.
She is good at giving cheek smooches.
She has beautiful blue eyes.
She loves studying herself in the mirror.

We owe a big thank you to all of our friends and family who have helped us along the way! We are so fortunate to have such wonderful people in our lives to offer such wonderful support. A special thank you to my mom for all of her help. I will never be able to thank her enough for everything she has done for us.

Looking back on the fall...

We are long overdue for another update so this might be rather lengthy, but I promise lots of pictures. Things have been moving along pretty smoothly with my pregnancy. I continued to have sonograms at my monthly check-ups until my placental lake disappeared and there wasn’t a need to continue checking it.

27 Weeks

That is one sweet baby girl!

I began to panic around the end of October when I realized that we hadn’t taken any baby education classes. So we did the only thing that people with absolutely no baby experience do. We signed up for every class that we could find: baby care basics, birthing, infant safety/CPR and David’s personal favorite… breastfeeding. I was really relieved when another dad finally walked into that one! And yes, we were the nerdy ones at the front of the class taking notes. I even took a picture to document the occasion. Needless to say, we logged many class hours and we still feel clueless, but a little less so.

He looks so relaxed practicing that jaw hold! I am not too sure about this hold, but the nurse said she swears by it!

Baby Bump Update : Week 28

We enjoyed dressing up for Halloween, although our options were a little limited this year. I have to say that David’s shorts were the best part of our costume. Oww owww!

We had a 3D sonogram on November 6th. We were joined by a ton of family and friends as we watched on the big screen. My aunt, uncle and cousins were also able to join in on the fun, watching a live stream on their TV. Sloane wasn’t really in the mood to put on a show. We got a few good face shots but mostly she spent her time hiding her face in the placenta or covering it with her arms and hands. I guess she is saving all of the details for the big reveal! I can’t wait to see if she resembles the sonograms.

Sloane has really started moving quite a bit in the past few months. Sometimes it is more like a scene from "Alien." My students have also found it very interesting to watch. They are having a hard time wrapping their minds around the fact that there is a little person in there. I must admit sometimes I feel the same way. Just the other day my mom was watching her move around and her eyes got really big and she yelled “I think she is coming out!” and she held her hands up like she was getting ready to catch her! In fact ,as I am typing this, I am watching her move all around…

Baby Bump Update: 30 Weeks

The second weekend of November we had two showers! The first shower was hosted in Waxahachie by my wonderful and creative friends Kristen, Meghan and Sarah. It was fall-themed and absolutely adorable! We had another shower the next day hosted by my “aunt” Linda and her mom. It was themed to match Sloane’s room and it was too cute for words! It was so great to see so many friends and family! I just wish there had been more time to catch up with everyone. I still can’t get over how generous everyone has been. This little girl is going to have everything she will need!

After the shower Sharon had just a "few more" things for Sloane! Sloane loves her Great Aunt Sharon!

We hosted both of our families for Thanksgiving this year and we had a great time! David’s family came in and stayed with us for the weekend. Our brother-in-law Josh (with the assistance of David’s dad and David) worked hard installing new baseboards in most of our house. They all worked really hard and the baseboards are beautiful!! We are lucky to have such handy family members! David and I are both so lucky to work with such amazing people! Just recently we each had a shower thrown by our work staffs. We really had a great time and we are again overwhelmed at everyone's generosity.

We had our last sonogram this past Wednesday at my 35-week appointment. Sloane was of course being shy so we didn’t get any good pictures but they are estimating her weight at 6 pounds right now. The doctor said she should put on about ½ a pound per week from here on out, however, all of the books say one pound per week! I’m really hoping my doctor is more accurate because I just don’t want her to be a 10-pound baby like her daddy!

Baby Bump Update: 35 weeks

We will be checking in again soon!
